Internship positions

Internships provide undergraduate and graduate students with a fantastic opportunity to receive initial training and experience with children with special needs. Interns receive:

  • 12 hours of initial training in basic principles and applications of Applied Behavior Analysis
  • Regular, ongoing supervision by certified behavior analysts
  • Experience with children with a wide range of special needs, and a variety of ages and functioning levels
  • Practice using a variety of different teaching and prompting methods to facilitate social interaction between children
  • Preparation for work that requires handling groups of children
  • Letters of reference (at the end of 2-3 semesters)
  • Job leads (at the end of 2-3 semesters)

Intern Responsibilities

Our interns function as assistants to our social skills group leaders. Initial expectations are to come 8-10 hours per week consistently throughout the year, arrive on time, participate in activities, participate in the group, and praise the children for participating. Interns take on additional responsibilities as their skills improve: data collection, more opportunities to lead activities, etc. Interns are expected to follow the ALC calendar rather than their own school calendar.

Intern Opportunities

Interns have a variety of options at Advances Learning Center. In addition to assisting social skills groups, they may also choose a second area of interest to pursue. There are opportunities to assist in research projects, get experience with progress reporting, aide in the development of a social skills assessment, help with parent training, or be involved with materials/curriculum development.

Paid vs. Unpaid Internships

Interns must follow the Advances Learning Center calendar and commit to working from September through June. (ALC takes time off for Rosh Hashanah, Thanksgiving, 2 weeks of winter break, Passover, Easter, February and April vacations.) They must also come for training in the first week of September and additional training throughout the year. Students wishing to work only one semester may apply for an unpaid internship.
